The Culinary Union (Local 226) History

From Mob Era to Political Powerhouse

The Culinary Union (Local 226) History
1935–Present

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 is the dominant labor force in Las Vegas, representing 60,000 service workers. Historically, the union evolved from a mob-influenced organization under Al Bramlet to a disciplined, democratized force.

The Bramlet Era

Under Al Bramlet, the union utilized city-wide master contracts that covered the entire Strip. This concentration of power made the union a force no casino could ignore—and one that sometimes operated in gray areas.

The Frontier Strike

The six-year Frontier Strike (1991–1998) transformed the union into a disciplined, democratized force capable of sustaining the longest successful strikes in American history. Zero workers crossed the picket line.

Card Check Neutrality

In the modern corporate era, Local 226 utilizes Card Check Neutrality agreements to organize new mega-resorts without NLRB elections, trading labor peace for growth. New properties sign union contracts before they even open.

Political Power

Its power is entrenched through the Culinary Health Fund (providing free healthcare) and a formidable political operation that dictates Nevada's electoral outcomes. The union can mobilize thousands of door-knockers on any given election day.
